I Am Becoming

I cannot believe I was in the same room as Michelle Obama!!

No words can adequately express the extent of this feeling. But, of course, I am going to try anyway.

A night filled with promise, excitement, hope and gratitude. That’s the energy that exuded from everyone around you. We were all here to honor a woman, a Black woman, that we were lucky to call our First Lady for 8 years. Diversity all around you: every race/ethnicity, every age, every gender. All waiting patiently to be blessed with her presence.

She appears and, honestly, it’s ethereal.

She walks with a certain grace.

She speaks with a delicate yet very powerful eloquence.

Yet she’s just like us. She’s just like the poor Black girl that grew up in Compton and was bussed out to schools because her intelligence could not (would not) be restricted. She had to fight, physically and figuratively. She had a disabled parent who was the rock. Just. Like. Us.

Just like me.

If I did not attend last night, I would not feel the inspiration I feel today. I would have missed out on something absolutely life changing. I would not know what it was like to sit amongst greatness. To witness the American Dream come full circle.

I thank you Michelle Obama, my First Lady.

For allowing us a glimpse into your life and sharing your story.

For working so hard to become the woman you are today.

For pushing us to become the women (people) that we are meant to be.

Thank you.

For making me see that I am becoming also.

I am becoming me.

Confident, determined, strong, sure.
